Introduction

The RHCSA Field Manual is a practical, hands-on guide to learning the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Operating System and preparing for the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) exam (EX200). It’s geared towards practical skills the Linux Sysadmin is likely to encounter in their day-to-day. This book is largely hands-on and each chapter is intended for the learner to work through the exercises and run the commands in their terminal as they go along. Labs for key topic areas are designed to reinforce the material covered in the chapters. Practice exams at the end of the book are designed to provide comprehensive prep under simulated exam conditions and to assess readiness.

Who is this book for?

This book is intended for IT or tech professionals with some Linux experience. A certain amount of proficiency with Linux and the Linux CLI is expected. This book isn’t necessarily geared towards the novice or beginner Linux user, but see

for some helpful resources geared towards the beginner.

Why get RHCSA certified?

Like all of the Red Hat certifications the exam is 100% performance-based and test takers must demonstrate the ability to administer systems hands-on under conditions simulating real-world. It’s for this reason the Red Hat exams can be some of the most challenging but also among the most well-regarded industry certifications. For Linux System Administrators and those who work with Linux in their day-to-day, even if it’s not Red Hat, becoming a Red Hat Certified System Administrator is a signal that you possess real battle-tested Linux Sysadmin chops making it arguably the industry leading entry-level Linux cert. The certification is evidence of technical skills and aptitude that aren’t just theoretical knowledge but a demonstrated ability to diagnose and solve real-world type problems “hands on keyboard” in a Linux terminal.
